TWITTA etiquette.
8.18.2009

which has become a bit of a problem in my present work place, who you can also follow on twitter: @magiccityatl. because of the overwhelming amount of girls in the club gaining a twitter account, and having such loud and garish thoughts, the club has had to put some order in line to keep the girls from..well..shitting where they eat.
surprisingly, i am NOT one of the girls giving the club a bad look, or saying things that are a conflict for the business of MAGIC CITY or the industry of STRIP(so iv been told), BUT unfortunately the rules have effected me all the same. and unfortunately for them, i dislike the restrictions that the club has placed on the girls, its borderline censorship, and in my opinion, limits what i can say or how i feel about certain things/current events and/or other clubs. even tho this hasnt been a problem for me thus far, it may present one in the future if i decide to speak on any of those topics.
MAGIC CITY would like us to be careful when telling the twitter world and our followers where we are at, club wise, when we are not at work. saying we are at any other club besides MAGIC CITY poses a bit of a problem for the club, we will call it "conflict of interest". example, i say, "im at club deja vu, its a great crowd and having fun"..thats constitutes as me promoting another club(in their opinion). they would also like us to be mindful of what we say about certain people, as they are probably patrons of our club. and even if i, myself am asked to host an event at another club (that is not a strip club) while magic city is open, it would be considered NOT OK if i promoted that i would be WORKING their as a host and posting this on twitter and/or my blog, even if the other club is paying me to do so. as you can imagine, these rules would make it very difficult(for me) to make extra income hosting parties at other clubs, or honoring social invites to different night life events outside of magic city. even tho, MOST girls disagree with some of these guidelines, the club's defense is "if you worked for coke, you dont talk about pepsi"..in so many words.
i will speak ONLY for myself. as an independent contractor who pays the house (magic city) to work, i find it more and more annoying to be compared to companies who pay their employees a salary to work for them, which is not at all the kind of payroll we conduct, as a matter of fact, the customers are our payroll. in the club's defense, i do understand why they would like to keep their name going in the best positive direction, without a bunch of loud mouth girls jeopardizing that with random and slanderous tweets, which HAS happened recently. they have been in business for 25 years and understandably would like to keep business striving another 25 years with out a hitch. it is just my opinion that what i do in my personal time on my personal laptop should be left alone, and i do not like to be policed or censored when it comes to MY social networks that i have been on since before the club gained an account. i have a disclaimer on my blog as well as my twitter that reads:
Disclaimer: The opinions expressed here are the views of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of Magic City
i did this for obvious reasons. ONE, because i would like to protect myself as well as the club, TWO, to show the club my intentions are not at all malicious and i respect boundaries. as of today, i still do not agree with the new rules for the ladies in the club regarding social networks, and they are aware and we have discussed this at great lengths..stay tuned.
i promote my club to the fullest, MAGIC CITY, is my extended family and this is the only exclusive club that i strip in at the time, i do not dance ANYWHERE else. with that being said, me and the club have agreed to disagree and i have decided to help them out with some friendly common sense reminders, whether you work for the club or not.
2. exercises some discretion. i know its tough, sometimes i want to say FUCK *****, but then i count to ten and kill them with kindness. somethings are better left unsaid, untyped..and sometimes, just un-THOUGHT.
3. people are following you for your thoughts and opinions and insight on who you are and why they should follow, so instead of talking shit about HER, talk shit about yourself.
4. even though you can DELETE tweets, its probably just smarter to be of sound and mind when posting certain things, screen shots will always trump deleting a tweet. if you said it, it can and will be found!
5. twitter is a social network. be social. talk back to people, not just about them.
6. dont ask people to follow you. this isnt a contest about who has the most followers! you should only want people to follow you that actually give a fuck about what you are doing..
im sure i could go on forever, but these are the basics, because most of the people that NEED guidelines are simple anyway. i do dislike to be at odds with the club that i work for about something i dont think they will have much success in controlling (being that the social network is so broad and echoing) BUT, i do understand their point of view, respect the boundaries and will move forward doing what i have been doing, being as that has got me in NO trouble so far!
if you would like to follow magic city on twitter they are @magiccityatl. here are some more fun gals who work for the club, with lots of sassy shit to say! check them out:
@gyrl81 @ms450 @leileezy @frostyflakes @monaroe @always_faithful @gigimaguire @mzbakervh1 @barbiebentley @truth87 @jred22 @therealpeach @lisanichole714...and probably some other girls, either i forgot, or i just dont FUCK with them enough to shout them out.
P.S. dear magic city, though i disagree with what you have to say about this, i will defend to death, your right to say it. and i respect it.

censorship is a bitch, but it's good to see that you and the good people at MC can see eye-to-eye and realize that you can agree to disagree and then move on.
but like you said, the list could go on about the twitter etiquette. but some people really just don't know how to act when it comes to the shit.
you know I say it all the time. if you don't like, UNFOLLOW. :D
Wowser. We JUST had a meeting at the club where I bartend where the bosses imposed some very similar restrictions on our tweeting. Made me feel some kind of way since I don't even follow any of my co-workers. The scary realization is the more people continue to bully, battle, & bullsh-t on these online social nets, the sooner the powers that be will impose restrictions on its use. Pretty soon it'll be in Corporate training manuals between sexual harassment & tax forms! And when that day comes I'll remember I read it here 1st Brook!
*i suggest social vegetarianism folks! Cut the BEEF out ur social diets :)
Am I allowed to leave a comment here since I'm Magic City?... Hope so.
Well, I think this was well put and clearly shows the difficulties of "free speech". While we all like to think it's free, someone has to pay for it.
It's not easy or fun making decisions that make good people upset. I always pray that I make the correct decisions when they affect other peoples lifestyle.
I think Ms.Carter is a very talented young lady that will be successful in whatever she puts her mind to, And She Has My Support.
It's funny how one of the places that exists today due to America attempting NOT to censor EVERYTHING in the damn USA now wants to censor it's "workers". While I understand their (Magic City) logic behind their "censorship", it isn't fair because you're right, this isn't a work environment like Coca Cola or Pepsi; you can't call in sick and use a sick day to still get paid; if your ass aint dancing, you aint getting cashed out. If there were no "dancers" , Magic City wouldn't make any money.
I think it's more fair for Magic City to address the loud mouth geechy's who are bringing NEGATIVE attention to the club and leave the other chicks alone. It's only fair...
Sux that there's such censorship but its understandable. You kno b*tches always find a way to ruin something & there's a trickle down effect. smh
Do ya thing mama- as per the rest *blank stare*
Brava.......very well written Ms. Brook lynn
I enjoy your point-o-view

I understand what they mean and their intentions but don't agree. If a dancer is tweeting and portraying the club in negative light and/or tweeting about who's in Magic City and certain club patrons don't want their bi on the net, that's to be respected, completely understandable. Those mental midgets should have enough sense to use discretion as to what they tweet. If they are too dense to know what not to tweet, then it's in MC's best interest to tell them.
Is this a dancer only policy or is every MC employee not allowed to tweet their plans/locations unless those plans involve MC?
My response to the Coke/Pepsi analogy is: Does the NFL tell their players they don't aren't allowed to tweet from NBA games because that's promoting another sport and encouraging people to spend their money on NBA stuff instead of NFL?
Magic City wants to have the cake and eat it too. It's unfair to profit from the dancers promoting MC on twitter and then turn around and dictate what to tweet when they're off work and enjoying themselves. My guess(I'm too lazy to check) is that well over 15,000 people follow the MC dancers collectively. It's free promotion for the City every time a dancer tweets about being at work, heading to work, etc. If a dancer is kicking it/dancing at another strip club I could see the conflict of interest but a regular club...where is the conflict of interest? Dancers are people and have lives outside of dancing. Everyone(the customers) doesn't hit strip clubs every night and the people that do are going to Magic City regardless of who's dancing.
Where does it stop? Is Magic City going to dictate facebook and myspace statuses as well? What if a non-dancing friend tweets a dancer on some "Can't wait to hit the Velvet Room tonight with @(insert dancer's name here)"? Is that a violation of the Magic City Twitter Code of Conduct? What if someone tweets a dancer asking if she's working tonight? Is the dancer allowed to tweet back "no"?
As the cliche goes, censorship is a slippery slope.
For the record: The dancers who's tweets I've seen(some of the names listed) do a good job promoting the club in a positive light as does this blog;-)
Brook....This was very good....And Twitter has became the new Myspace and the new Myspace had became the old. And as been on Twitter since 2008 (I think) I feel this was on point and needs to be stated.
My B.K.!
I agree. It's like taxing to the fullest. Seems like they dnt want you guys to make any money if they dnt get a piece of it. it's a world to see and much more blessings to reap than magic city for some of you girls and they just cnt digest that.
You're a good one Brook.
I definitely understand (and respect) the fact that you are following the rules of your place of employment but this is a little different in that you PAY to WORK there. I don't think that its being fair OR reasonable for anyone at the place you PAY to work to tell you "Hey, even when you're not at work, you're working for us, so watch your mouth." Come on now...are you serious?
Yea, there are a few loud mouth hags that have managed to get on Twitter and pretty much allow their attitudes and stuck-upedness to 'filthy' the club but if any of the 'readers' are anything like me, they don't fault the club. Instead, they look at the individual and say that she needs to fall back. I JUST read an argument that one of the dancers of MC had with another girl. I didn't say "Now that damn Magic City dancer is a mess." I said "This chick needs to STFU and let go and let God b/c she sounds reckless." I didn't blame Magic for any of her mess b/c it's not them. Since they don't write her twits, why would I?
Nonetheless, as I said before...it's ridiculous and you're way better than me. I really could not allow someone to police what it is that I blog about or what it is that twit ALL because I work there. I guess it's a different standard b/c you make it known that this is where you work but still. I think that the girls who are doing the 'foul' should be called 'the foul' by themselves...everyone else shouldn't be governed according to them.
Just my two cents...you don't have to spend it.
Jia.
Oooh and Bravo to @JS (wait...we ain't on twitter. Why did I use @???). That comment was EXCELLENT shit!
this is funny. Magic & nem don't play, do they? even tho it seems like a crazy cool place to work, that exclusive shyt they got goin on throws me off a bit ;-/
Shame, you have to censor your writing and thoughts online because the club? if thats not a pile of shit i dont know what is. Magic needs to get it together, sounding like a cult that worships hitler.
you hit what you talk abt in the nucleus--life stry.
